GARDEN CITY — City officials hope to avoid disaster by replacing yet another aging water main that flows under the Boise River.
Public works officials say the pipe, which passes under the river from behind City Hall to the Strawberry Glen area, was exposed during recent low river flows, and could be easily damaged.
City council members approved the major replacement at a cost of about $450,000. The project began May 28 and will run through July 8.
The story is a familiar one for residents in that section of Garden City.
More than a hundred homes in the Plantation neighborhood in Garden City lost water in April of 2012 when a similar water main broke beneath the Boise River.
Seven families had no water for four days.
The work to repair the broken line — which Mayor John Evans suspected was caused be a tree trunk snagging it — cost $700,000.
City leaders say this year’s project will be less costly because no new water lines will be installed in the surrounding streets.
